Dental Calculus

Dental Calculus is dental plaque that has remained on the teeth and has hardened by the addition of calcium and other matter found in saliva. Once teeth have calculus, a tooth brush or floss can not remove the buildup and it should be removed by a dentist or hygienist. Otherwise, it can cause bacteria to lodge between the gums and the teeth, causing gum infection, cavities, and loosening of the teeth.

Our office routinely removes calculus by performing a thorough scaling and root planing of the teeth. This is done using a machine called an ultrasonic scaler as well as hand scalers to remove as much calculus as possible both above and below the gum line. If needed, we offer topical and local anesthetics to insure that our patients are comfortable during the procedure.
