Q: I’m interested in getting veneers, but I’ve heard veneers are fragile. Will having them affect what food I can eat?

A: Veneers offer many benefits. They can cover teeth that are misshapen or discolored, fix gaps between your teeth, and more.
You won’t have to make huge changes to your diet, but veneers won’t be as strong as your natural teeth so you will have to make some adjustments to how you eat.

You shouldn’t use your veneers to chew crunchy foods like apples or nuts, or sticky foods like taffies. If you are eating a crunchy food like an apple, slice it up into smaller chunks first and chew them with your back teeth.

Talk to your dentist to find out if you are a good candidate for veneers and discuss any special considerations for your teeth.

Q: What brand of toothpaste is the best?

A: The brand of toothpaste you choose to use isn’t as important as your brushing technique and the time you spend brushing your teeth. Most toothpastes are made of the same ingredients, usually containing about 75% water and humectant, 20% abrasive particles, and 5% other things like foaming agents, flavoring agents, and fluoride.

The brand of toothpaste might be a concern for people with allergies or sensitive teeth. Herbal toothpastes can be useful if you are allergic to mint of sodium laurel sulfate, which is commonly used as a foaming agent in toothpastes. Some toothpastes, like Sensodyne, have special ingredients to help decrease tooth sensitivity. Talk to your dentist about whether these brands are the right option for you.

Q: I’ve heard that athletes have a higher risk for cavities. Why would this be true?
A: There are various reasons why athletes have a higher risk for cavities. To build up their energy, a lot of athletes consume high-carb or acidic foods like nutrition bars and sports drinks in the middle of working out or during a break on the field. Then they’ll usually resume exercising without brushing or flossing, so the food is still stuck to their teeth. As they exercise they’ll breathe hard through their mouths. This reduces their saliva production, making their teeth more vulnerable to decay.

If you’re an athlete, you need to take extra care of your teeth. Talk to your dentist about a fluoride program. Brush and floss regularly, and chew sugarless gum after meals to help loosen bits of food from your teeth. If you do consume a snack in the middle of a game or when you’re working out, take a moment to rinse your mouth out with water afterward.
